What is the right size for wool socks?

When knitting socks, it is good to know how many stitches go into each sock, because the number of stitches is also largely determined by your own handwriting, but you can find tables that give you some direction, for example, from Novita. Novita's 7 Brothers seems to be the most popular sock yarn, although other manufacturers also have a selection. Here is a sock measurement and stitch table made by Taito shop, which has been calculated for both thin and thick yarns.

I personally like to use size 4 needles and the number of stitches on the shank depends on the size of the sock. In socks that reach above the knee, the starting number of stitches is about 60 and narrows towards the ankle. As a general rule, however, a size 38 sock has 48 stitches at the ankle, then the sock fits well and does not fall below the heel. If the sock is not narrowed or shaped at the ankle, the problem is very often that the sock does not stay on the foot and always rolls under the foot.

The number of stitches in a sock depends on the thickness of the yarn, the size of the needles you use, and your handiwork. It's always a good idea to make a sample patch. Cast on 20 stitches and knit 20 rows. Then measure the width of your patch. If the width is 10 cm, for example, you can count how many times that 10 cm goes into the arm of the sock you're making and cast on that number of stitches.

Knit on the shank as much as you want, make the heel either simple or reinforced. In a simple heel, the right side is knitted and the wrong side is knitted accordingly. A reinforced heel is obtained by knitting on the right side so that every other stitch is slipped and every other stitch is knitted normally. On the wrong side, all stitches are purled. The wedge decrease at the end of the sock can be done according to the measurement chart when the correct number of centimeters is reached or when the little toe is knitted hidden.
