What is the right size for wool socks?
When knitting socks, it's good to know how many stitches will fit into each sock, because the number of stitches is also largely determined by your own handwriting, but tables that give direction can be found, for example, at Novita. Novita's 7 brothers seems to be the most popular sock yarn, although other manufacturers also have a selection. Here is the sock measurement and stitch table made by Taito shop, which is calculated for both thin and thick yarns.
I personally like to use No. 4 needles and the number of stitches in the stem depends on the size of the sock. In socks that reach above the knee, the number of starting stitches is about 60 and tapers towards the ankle. However, as a general rule, if there are 48 loops in the ankle of a size 38 sock, then the sock fits well and does not fall under the heel. If the sock is not narrowed or shaped at the ankle, the problem is very often that the sock does not stay on the foot and always rolls under the foot.
The number of stitches in the sock depends on the thickness of the yarn and the size of the needles you use and also your handwriting. It's always worth making a sample patch. Cast on 20 loops and knit 20 layers. Then measure the width of your patch. If the width is, say, 10 cm, you can count how many times that 10 centimeter goes on the stem of the sock you made and create that many stitches.
Weave the stem as much as you want, make the heel either simple or reinforced. In a simple heel, the right side is knitted with the right side and the wrong side with the wrong side. The reinforced heel is obtained by weaving on the right side in such a way that every other stitch is lifted without weaving and every other stitch is woven normally correctly. On the purl side, all stitches are knitted purl. In the table above, you can find the stitch distribution used in the reduction of the heel tab.
The wedge reduction at the end of the sock can be done according to the measurement table when the correct number of centimeters is reached or when the little toe is hidden.
Always worth a try! If nothing comes of your own socks, you can always check out Juuttisäki's selection ;)
