Macrame knots

"Macrame knitting was probably developed by the Arabs in the 13th century. Arab craftsmen tied the extra threads from the ends of textiles as border decorations. The term macrame comes from the Arabic word migramah, which can mean border decoration or an embroidered veil. The technique was transferred with the Moors to Spain and from there to the rest of Europe. Macrame arrived In England in the late 17th century under King William III, and the 19th century was the golden age of the technique, macrame knotting has been popular among sailors who used the technique in things like ornaments and hammocks. It has also been used in South and Central America various knitting techniques. In the 20th century, macrame gained popularity, among others, among the hippie movement" The source for this history was Wikipedia.

Today, macrame knitting is a nice pastime for us do-it-yourselfers. Simple macrame knots can be made by almost any of us, if we have the passion and will. However, you don't always have to do everything yourself. Sometimes you can buy everything ready-made.

Macrame decorations can be tied, for example, on the wall, on the table, as key chains, napkin rings... Imagination is the limit. I myself have knitted wall decorations, key rings , pillow covers and coasters from natural colored cotton thread. I have then dyed the cotton thread. Now to yellow. Maybe later also with other colors. Plant dyeing is interesting, so we might see a lot of exciting colors in the future.

The beautiful wing-shaped macrame knotted into a napkin ring is also suitable, for example, as a towel holder or a key chain, due to its size. More of these, and the wall decoration is ready. Just add a piece of wood or a branch from which you will hang the "wings".

If you have enough enthusiasm, you can try knotting yourself, for example, a flower ampel. Instructions can be found e.g. From the website of Kotin Kuvalehti.

If it happens that the ampel turns into a wolf, you can order an ampel for yourself from our online store :)
