I could say that I grew up in the midst of yarn. You could assume that I was born with knitting needles in my hands - however, this is clearly not the case.

As a child, we did cross stitches, crocheted and practiced with grandma. At school, the rags have been used to make woolen socks that look like a mitten, which could be used as a hat at one end and the tip of the nose at the other. For many years, the dreams of owning my own knitting addiction took a back seat to everything else. Just recently, last fall, I was sitting with my mother in the living room watching a movie on the TV - mother, as usual, covered in moss in an armchair with her itches and a project from that time in her hands. That's when I announced that I want to make my own beanie for this winter. Of course, the master himself, enthusiastic about the idea of his posterity, started looking for suitable, easy and nice colored yarn and needles. Confidently imagining the perfect beige beanie in my head, I started to implement it as instructed by my mother, when I had found the right tools.

We thought we could get about 5cm in it, fingers crossed, until something more important than keeping my head warm, yard work, became an activity. Of course, I took the itchiness and my pride with me when I jumped on the bus and headed towards Turkukoti - still confident of Turku's finest beanie in winter frosts. I think that same evening I sat on the bed under the blanket and decided to continue our production. I probably didn't last more than 15 minutes when I went out with my friends. Inadvertently, I left my project on the dresser. Of course, being a cat person, the cat was found at home - which had already been interested in the new mess in my hands. I come home and see that the ribbons of the beanie ghost are lying on the floor and the longest of the boy's curtain rods is a pile of yarn on top of the washing machine. I desperately collected stitches and managed to revive my little one back to size. In a fit of rage, I rushed to the drawer of the convalescent dresser and went to sleep. As you might guess, my perfect head warmer is still there in the box.

There have been many inquiries from the master himself: "Is the beanie ready?" "Has progress been made?" Laughing at the whole thing, I've vowed that of course I'll finish it - even though we both know that the baggy "beanie" that looks like a sweatband will never be finished. I still leave the knitting, weaving and other thread-related nonsense to my mother. It's so damn good at it!

(Fortunately, my mother has made me a reflector hat, which does the same thing as my dream.)

The blog text is written by my daughter Kia Välimäki, who most obviously will not continue in her mother's footsteps in the field of handicrafts. :D But hats off to just trying! Whether your dream is a neck scarf, mittens, wool knee socks or men's woven accessories, I will be happy to help so that your own nerves can rest.
